A tragic accident has left five young adults in their 20s dead and three others injured in County Louth, Ireland. The incident occurred on the L3168 road near Gibstown in Dundalk, just after 9 p.m. last night. The victims, three men and two women, were traveling in a Volkswagen Golf when it collided with a Toyota Landcruiser. All five occupants of the Golf died at the scene, while the other car's occupants, a man and a woman, were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for non-life-threatening injuries. The deceased include two individuals from Dromconrath in County Meath, one from Carrickmacross in County Louth, and a Scottish visitor who was the girlfriend of one of the men in the car. The group was on their way to socialize in the Dundalk area. The tragedy has deeply affected the families and communities in the affected areas, with local and national leaders expressing their shock and condolences. President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin both issued statements, offering support and prayers to the families and friends of the deceased, as well as the injured. Tánaiste Simon Harris echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the country's collective grief and gratitude to emergency responders. Superintendent Charlie Armstrong of the Dundalk Garda station acknowledged the profound impact of the deaths on families and communities, while Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú (SF) promised support to the families during this unimaginable tragedy. The road remains closed for a technical examination by Garda forensic collision investigators, with diversions in place. This tragic event marks a somber milestone, as it occurred on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Victims, bringing the total number of road fatalities in Ireland this year to 157, compared to 148 last year. The statistics are even more alarming, with 59 drivers, 36 pedestrians, 28 motorcyclists, and 13 vehicle passengers losing their lives in road incidents this year. Additionally, 13 pedal cyclists, two e-scooter drivers or passengers, and one pillion passenger have also died. The road safety campaign group Parc expressed heartbreak over the loss of five more lives on the roads, with Chairwoman Susan Gray highlighting the tragic reality of 50 young people aged 30 or younger being killed in road accidents this year. Superintendent Armstrong appealed for information from anyone who witnessed the incident on the L3168 between 8:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. last night, urging them to contact the Garda Investigation Team or the Garda Confidential Line.
